First trophy of the season, y’all! And being Real Madrid, we had to do it under stressful circumstances. It wouldn’t be us if there wasn’t nail biting, right?
(Video)
In rainy Trondheim, Marco Asensio started off the scoring at 21″ – his RM debut! Franco Vázquez equalized for Sevilla at 41″ In the second half Yevhen Konoplyanka gave Sevilla the lead scoring at 72 from a penalty conceded by Sese. But Sergio made up for it by leveling us up at 90+3. Timothée Kolodziejczak was sent off after getting yellow cards at 90 and 93. Well that didn’t take long! So Sevilla was down to 10 men. Dani Carvajal won it for us with a terrific strike at 119. Campeones!
And then the celebrations began!

Zidane: “A player like Ramos always makes the difference”
by Javier Garcia (Trondheim) | Photographers: Angel Martinez/Antonio Villalba“The most important thing is the group and our squad has got depth to it”, he declared in the press room.
Zinedine Zidane took to the press room at the Lerkendal Stadion after his side claimed victory to become the European Super Cup champions. The head coach – whose press conference was interrupted by several of his players who entered to celebrate the triumph – had words of praise for the Man of the Match: “A player like Sergio Ramos always makes the difference. I told him to push up a bit more towards the end and he was exactly where he needed to be”.
“We’ve got a big enough squad, that’s for sure. If we’re not able to sign anyone we’ve got the numbers in the squad and there are four of five who weren’t here today. We’ve got young players and others who’ve got the experience. The most important thing is the group and our squad has got depth to it”.
Asensio
“He put in a complete performance, it wasn’t all about the goal, which in itself was fantastic. When you give a player confidence and they respond in the best possible way, we’re all happy. For a final to be a good one you need two good sides and I’m pleased. He’s going to remain here with us. He needs to play well and today he did just that”.Modric
“I had to name my starting XI. He joined up with us later and that was the decision I took. He didn’t play the 90 minutes and that’s the way it turned out. I’m happy with his performance, but compared to the other players he had fresher legs when he came on”.
And then the team invaded Zizou’s presser!
Goofballs! Zizou is one of only 5 people to have won the UEFA Super Cup as both a coach and a player. The other 4 are some very familiar faces: Carlo Ancelotti, Diego Simeone, Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique.

Ramos, Man of the Match in the European Super Cup final
“To start the season winning a trophy is always incredible”, said the Whites’ captain.
It had to be him, Sergio Ramos, was again decisive in a final. When everything looked lost, he made the most of a cross from Lucas Vázquez to score with his head in the 93rd minute, taking the game in to extra-time. The madridista captain, just like in the Undécima, was chosen as the best player in the European Super Cup. The man of the finals appeared again as he helped win the first trophy of the season.“It’s incredible. Until the game is over you have to keep fighting, because fighting until the end brings the rewards and the cross from Lucas made it a pleasure to put away. Above all, we must highlight the collective effort and fight. The team, despite the absences, turned up today and to start the season winning a trophy is always incredible”.
Analysis
“The game had different phases. At the start we had a Madrid who dominated, although after getting the goal we dropped back. In the second half they dominated, we’ve got things to keep working on to go in to La Liga in the best shape possible”.“It’s important to give your all. The DNA of Madrid is to fight. Whenever there is that margin, that second and that minute, you have to stand up. This is what I’ve learnt since I came here. Personally I’m very happy, despite the penalty. I was lucky enough to draw the game level. Despite the absences, we have shown up with young players and we are worthy winner of the Super Cup”.
Goals in the 93rd minute
“Yes, with respect to the Atlético and Sevilla fans, there are unique moments in life and I’m delighted to be a part of these moments. Tomorrow I will remember it better and I will enjoy it because at the minute everything is going really fast”.Leagues
“Now is not the time for regrets, we’ve just won the Super Cup. We would have liked to have won more leagues but now is the time to enjoy winning the Super Cup. There are teams that do well in the league, but we are ready to compete with them. It’s a European title and it’s difficult to get here and you must give it the importance that it deserves”.

Lucas: “We’ve shown again that we’ve got a great squad”
“It was very difficult. The game was almost lost, but we kept trying and Ramos’ goal came and then the spectacular goal from Carvajal. He deserved it more than anyone and showed what a great player he is. The team has shown again that we’ve got a great squad and we’ve got a lot of depth”.Casemiro: “The Real Madrid shirt is that: fight until the end.”
“Ramos is the first that never gives up and he’s always there in the important moments. A player of his level is incredible for us. We are happy with the title and for everything. In the end, in those decisive moments you always have that extra, that desire and intensity which we have seen today”.Casemiro: “I’m the happiest person in the world”
“We’ve celebrated it quite a lot because we had to work for the win, although we’re used to it now. The Real Madrid shirt is that: fight until the end. You have to congratulate everyone. We obviously wanted to win before the game but you have to evaluate the opponent and they play good football”.Depth in the squad
“We’ve got the best squad in the world and we’ve shown it. You could see that both teams weren’t at their best physically and you have to congratulate Sevilla because they played very well. We are growing and we have to keep fighting and working because there’s a lot ahead. We have worked a lot in pre-season and you can see. I’m the happiest person in the world”Joke in Zidane’s press conference
“The whole squad has a lot of love for him and we wanted to make the joke. We have to enjoy it with him because he deserves it”.

Florentino Pérez: “We’ve got an extraordinary squad and our ambition is to win it all”
“Winning the European Super Cup isn’t easy and we’ve won the last three that we’ve played in”, added the president.
Florentino Pérez expressed his satisfaction in the wake of the European Super Cup triumph over Sevilla: “We’re very pleased because it’s not easy to win the Super Cup and we’ve won the last three we’ve played after winning the Champions League. It’s deserving of a lot of praise and all the more so at the start of a season in which, after the European Championships, not all of the players are available”.
“Sevilla also had players out, but I’m happy that there were five academy products in our starting line-up. It’s very satisfying and bodes well for the future. I have to congratulate Sevilla on a fine performance. You’re always you’re left feeling a bit of sympathy: you see your pal looking down and you think how that would have been you had you not won it”.
Stunning goals
“The two spectacular goals from Asensio and Carvajal were the best part and I told them that when congratulating them. It’s destiny that this should happen to Ramos, but I’ve already told him off and said that he has to score earlier on, we’re not up for all this suffering”.The squad
“We’ve got an extraordinary squad. We’ve still got to work very hard and our ambition is always to win it all. We’ve got a great player in every position on the pitch. Up until 31 August anything can happen, but we’re really satisfied with the players that we’ve got. It’s very difficult to improve our squad. We’ve got the best players in every position, as was seen at the European Championship”.
Start as you mean to go on, I always say. So let’s keep winning the trophies (but with less stress, please!)
