Boy, the holiday season has put everything behind schedule! I didn’t forget that we won another trophy. Hell no! Things have just been…complicated. Here’s a quick and dirty rundown of the final.
Being Real Madrid, we do nothing easy (or so it sometimes feels). We almost got gored by Kashima’s antlers for real. I’m sure they could hear me swearing all the way to Japan.
Benz (btw, happy belated birthday, Karim! – He turned 29 on Monday) opened the scoring at 9 and we dominated the first half. However, at 44′, Shibasaki leveled the score.
Coming back for the second half, Shibasaki scored at 52″ (my cussing began anew). 7 minutes later Lucas Vazquez was brought down in the box by Shuto. Cristiano stepped up and took the penalty, equalizing the score. We had some more solid chances, but it was not to be. The match went into extra time. Cris pulled out all the stops scoring at 98′ and 104′ to complete a hat trick and bring the Club World Cup home for us. (Video)
That makes us the team with the most intercontinental titles ever: Five. In addition to the Club World Cup Trophy, there were other awards given out:
adidas Golden Ball: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
adidas Silver Ball: Luka Modric (Real Madrid)
adidas Bronze Ball: Gaku Shibasaki (Kashima Antlers)
Alibaba YunOS Auto Award (aka The Big Ass Key Award): Cristiano Ronaldo
FIFA Fair Play Award: Kashima Antlers
And then celebrations kicked in! Everyone had to have their picture with the trophy.
Let’s hope that we continue with our winning streak and that the year to come brings many more trophies. Tomorrow we find out our next opponents in the Copa Del Rey.
