Well, I got home from work at 10 PM so that tells you what kind of day I just had. But you know who had a good day? These guys! (And a few more not in the picture). It was FIFA’s Best awards in Zurich.
This is going to be a bit quick and dirty because I’m exhausted. The nominees traveled to Switzerland for the festivities.
Five Blancos were named to the 2016 FIFA FIFPro World11, which is voted by their peers. And they were all repeats for this award: Cris (10 times), Sergio (7 times), Marcelo (3 times), Lukita & Toni (twice each). We were the dominant club this year. The others named for the honor were: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Dani Alves (Juventus), Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez (Barcelona). The winners posed for a selfie with host Eva Longoria.
And Cris took home the FIFA Men’s Player 2016 award! Since the Ballon D’Or has gone back to it’s home with France Football magazine, this is the inaugural “Best” awards so he is the first to win it. He took 34.54% of the vote. Lionel Messi got 26.42% and Antoine Greizmann 7.53% The award is voted for by “a panel made up of national team coaches and captains from the 209 FIFA federations, a journalist representing each one of these countries and users of the FIFA website.” Cris had a stonking good year and IMHO, there’s no one who deserved it more.
And Junior was there to celebrate with his Papi!
Congratulations to the other winners Carli Lloyd (Best Women’s Player), Silvia Neid (Best Women’s Coach), Claudio Ranieri (Best Men’s Coach, beating out Zizou) and Mohd Faiz Subri of Malaysia, who took the home the Puskas Award for Best Goal of the Year. For a full list of winners, you can visit the Best Award page.
Zizou may have lost out to Ranieri and the magical Leicester City Cinderella season, but he did win France Football’s 2016 French Coach of the Year.
And Keylor Navas has won the EFE Trophy for the best Ibero-American player of 2016.
Dang, we’re just picking up the awards left and right!
Congratulations to everyone, both nominees and winners.
