Lyon’s Sexist Faux Pas

29 Jan

1485637472_481146_1485637680_noticia_normalOh…hell to the no. These were photos captured from the MEN’s Ligue One game between Olympique Lyon (OL) vs Lille on the weekend. And who quickly called them out on it? The captain of the OL women’s team and world-class defender, Wendie Renard.

“Lyon supporters… Can you give me an explanation on that banner: the men at the stadium, the women in the kitchen?”

Uh huh. She’s so polite. Some of the responses received thus far, not so much.

Rather than share that garbage, I’ll share this instead: during Renard’s current 10-year tenure with OL the women’s team has achieved –

  • 9 consecutive Division 1 Féminine titles (current holder and presently tied for 1st place)
  • 5 consecutive Coupe/Challenge de France titles (current holder)
  • 3 UEFA Women’s Champions League titles

Yuppers. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. The OL squad is not light on “known” players: Marozsán, Bouhaddi, Seger, Hegerberg, Lavogez, Buchanan, Morgan. I don’t think it will be easily balayé sous le tapis or swept under the carpet.

For fuck’s sake! Guess their male egos are too fragile (and their dicks undoubtedly too small) to cope with the fact that their women’s team kicks ass and takes names. Pathetic. I see women in the crowd near the signs. I probably would have gotten myself kicked out of the stadium because I would have tried to tear that stupid thing down. Arseholes. I just don’t understand why having women as part of the sport as fans or players is so fucking threatening to these idiots.

Yes! You are expressing the emotions I wanted to but couldn’t find the words. I don’t understand why either. I told a friend that the women’s club should start a campaign now encouraging all fans who thought this an asshat move to dump the men’s team, boycott their games, and follow the women’s team. I think that would be an incredible marketing strategy!

My ability to cope with bs is pretty much gone thanks to Trump. I think he’s desensitized me as well though. I’m usually frothing at the mouth over stuff like this.

I’m sad if you feel desensitized but I completely understand. I admit, my first reaction to seeing this was a very large sigh and not immediate anger or frustration. Then I saw Renard’s post and thought, “here’s a well known player calling out her own club in almost real-time; this needs my support.” Desensitized or not.
