Zidane: “LaLiga is a very long competition and we’ll keep working hard”

“If we keep creating chances, the goals will come, and hopefully that’ll be against Alavés”, added the Real Madrid coach.

Zinedine Zidane has spoken to the press on the day before the meeting with Alavés. The Whites’ coach discussed his side’s LaLiga chances: “It’s a very long competition and we’re going to keep working hard. Every team will go through a bad patch and we’ll be there or there abouts. If it were the other way around and we had a seven-point advantage, I wouldn’t consider LaLiga won. If we want to win the league, we’ll have to come back strong. When I arrived here we were a long way behind but anything can happen in football. We’ve still got 33 games”.

“Injuries are always frustrating for a coach but there’s nothing we can do about it. That can happen over the course of a season and we have to deal with it. We lost the last game and we want to change things. That’s the good thing about football, we’ve got another game tomorrow and we want to play well and win it”.

Reasons for defeat against Betis
“There’s no explanation, we created chances to score. In the end, we weren’t able to score but I’m not worried, and I’m not focussing too much on what happened. We’ll analyse it, as always, because that’s our job, but the crucial thing is to create chances – I’d be concerned if we weren’t creating chances with the players we have. If we keep doing that, the goals will come and I’m sure it’ll be tomorrow”.

“I focus on the fact we had 27 shots, it just didn’t want to go in. We didn’t perform brilliantly but it wasn’t that bad either. I’m only thinking about the Alavés game and doing all we can to win it. We can’t change what happened, that’s football. Before the Betis game we played in San Sebastián and did a fantastic job. I’m not going to lose my head over one game”.

The final changes against Betis
“When I wanted to bring Lucas on for Modric, Marcelo got an injury and I wasn’t sure if I could make both changes at once or one at a time. It’s been interpreted in a different way but it’s not the case”.

Criticism for the rotations
“I’m going to keep doing my work in the same way because I believe strongly in what I do. We have a lot of players and the rotations aren’t going to stop. There is no player who can play 70 matches per season, perhaps they used to play all the games when there were only 35 in a season. Not just from a physical point of view, they need to rest mentally too. We’ve got a lot of internationals and in the end, they never stop. We need the rotation system and the criticism won’t affect me”.

“That’s my character, I can’t shout for the sake of shouting. I deal with it in a calm manner because I have absolute confidence in my players, and I’m lucky enough to be coaching them. I want to show I’m good enough to be here. I’m relaxed and so are the players”.

Kroos
“He felt discomfort in his ribs again after the game and we didn’t want to take any risks. I hope it’s nothing serious and he’ll be able to play on Tuesday. He’s in a bit of pain today and the match is tomorrow – we’re not going to risk it”.

Bad luck
“I used to be the luckiest guy in the world, now I’m jinxed. I’m still extremely lucky because I absolutely love working here. It’s part of football and your luck can change quickly with another game tomorrow and we’re going to give it our best shot”.

Bale
“I don’t know when we’ll see the best of him but hopefully it’ll be soon because he’s fit again now. We know he can do a great job and he’s doing well. We’ll see how he goes in the coming days but I think he looks good”.

Treatment from the referees
“I’m not going to get involved with this because I never discuss referees. They do the best they can and we’re not looking for excuses. We want to do a good job and keep on with what we’ve been doing in recent times. We’re in a bad patch but I’m happy with the work we’re doing. We shouldn’t consider it any further. We’re not going to change”.

Enzo
“I hope he doesn’t score. We’ve got to look after our interests. I don’t know if it’ll be strange to be up against him but I’m happy for him because he’s doing a good job. I haven’t thought about it much. I’ll have my own feelings but the match is Alavés against Real Madrid, that’s the most important thing for me”.

“Enzo is very competitive, as am I. I’m watching his development as a player but I speak to him as a dad. I’m not his coach, I’m his dad and I don’t have to give him anything in terms of football. When we speak, it’s nothing more than a father-son relationship”.
