Zidane: “We’re playing the first final to win the group against Tottenham”

“We’re returning to Champions League action and coming up against a very good opponent motivates us”, added the coach.

Zidane spoke in the press room at Real Madrid City the day before the game against Tottenham, corresponding to match day 3 of the Champions League (Tuesday, 8:45pm CEST). The coach referred to the match and analysed the positive streak at home: “It’s down to everyone’s hard work. We’re always excited and want to compete well and were here to achieve things. We’re back in Champions League action against a very good opponent and that motivates us more”.

“It’s always a test for us against every team. We now have two games against Tottenham. Tomorrow is the first group final. Both teams have the same points. It’s going to be a good match for everyone who likes football and hopefully we get the three points”.

Ramos
“We could talk about Sergio for an hour. He’s our leader on and off the pitch. He’s our captain. As a player he has everything, he’s phenomenal. As a person, he is very principled. If he has to say something, he says it to your face. He has a lot of important qualities that help others. He is the club’s captain and leader. I played with him for a year and he has not changed at all. He’s still here and that means he’s doing great”.

Kane
“He is a good player and things are going very well for him. He’s essential for Tottenham. He’s good at everything and he’s always thinking about the goal in everything that he does. He finds spaces and has speed, he’s very complete. But Tottenham are not just about Kane and we’re going to prepare for this game well”.

Criticism
“People can talk and have their opinion. I have to do my job as well as possible and not do silly things. I’m not going to invent anything, I try to do thing in the best possible way. Many may say otherwise, but that’s not going to change what I want to do”.

Isco
“It’s his natural progression. He already knows he’s an important player at this club. Every time he has the chance to play he plays well and is better every day. The good thing about him is that he can play in a lot of positions. Obviously, the closer to the forwards the better. But he can also play in the middle. It depends on who we play and the way we want to set up. The most important thing is that he’s improving because he’s very good”.

“I’m not going to talk about the order of the ballon d’or candidates. It’s a prize that a jury votes on. I like Isco a lot because he’s always creative and tries things. Players who try thing to always end up being successful”.

Cristiano
“I’m very happy for him. He works a lot, he’s very professional and always wants to improve. I have a lot of respect for Cristiano, he’s an example for everyone. It’s good that he scored in the league, he’s already scored a lot of goals in the Champions League. We want him to be comfortable and scoring lots of goals”.

Keylor
“He’s trained well, he’s with us and has no problems. Tomorrow you’ll see if he plays”.

State of the team
“We’re going to play a lot of games, the season is very long. Three players are missing, but gradually things are returning to normal. During the season there’ll always be difficult times, but lately we’re winning and improving. That’s good for everyone”.

Injuries
“I can’t tell you the date they’ll return. With Dani we have to wait, but every day is one less. He’s really looking forward to coming back with us. Mateo needs more time, but he’s getting better. Regarding Gareth, I can’t tell you if he’s going to be back for the second game. I hope he’s back with us soon”

Modric
“We all know Luka’s qualities. He is an important player. When he plays, he plays very well, but when others play they also do well and find spaces”.

One hundred matches at Real Madrid
“I’m not going to give myself a grade, I’m happy. My lifetime goal was to play in Spain and I’m at the best club in the world. My passion now is to continue coaching this great club. I hope to be here another ten games, I’m not going to say 100 more because that’s a lot (laughter)”.

Isco: “We want to consolidate our position as leaders against Tottenham”
by Javier Garcia

“We hope to put in a complete performance and get the three points against difficult opposition”, said the Malaga-born midfielder.

Isco spook to the media the day prior to the match day 3 Champions League Group Stage game between Real Madrid and Tottenham. The midfielder spoke about the match at the Bernabéu: “The Champions League is always special for Real Madrid. We have a great opportunity to consolidate our position as leaders of the group against a very difficult side who are playing very well. We hope to put in a complete performance and get the three points”.

“The key is finding balance in the squad. I’m happy how things are going. I’m working hard and I hope to maintain this continuity”.

Ballon d’or
“I don’t think about that, it’s very difficult. I want to live in the moment, day to day. I’m very happy about how things are going and I hope to continue like this. Cristiano has to win it, there’s no question about that. It’s very difficult to be up there, it would be a dream. There are 30 nominees and a lot of them from Real Madrid. If the team is doing well, there are more chances to win individual prizes”.

Good level
“Without my hard work I would not have had these changes. I’m playing in my position, closer to the area, and having more continuity. That’s important for a footballer in order to grow in confidence”.

“Playing for Real Madrid isn’t easy, you have to win. The best players in the world are here and it’s difficult. I was patient and waited for my moment. When it came I was ready. I try to make the most of the confidence of the coach and take my opportunities”.

Cristiano’s goal
“It was a matter of time, Cristiano is a leather finisher. It is true that in LaLiga he’s not been amongst the goals but in the Champions League he’s been on fire. It’s good for us because we need him a lot”.

State of the team
“The atmosphere is very good, the team is full of confidence after what we achieved last year and the desire is to continue winning titles. We haven’t had all the squad available yet but we’re getting there as players are recovering”.

“We are 100% behind Zidane. He has shown the importance of rotations. It’s unquestionable after what he has done at Real Madrid. We understand that after the accumulated tiredness and the stoppages that there are people who are in the eleven because they’re in better shape and we all understand that”.

Advice for youngsters
“Football is a long process. They must work hard, be patience because their moment will come. Players like Marco (Asensio), Ceballos… have quality and it is a pleasure to have them with us”.

Praise
“I try to go unnoticed. I don’t watch the news or read what they say, I try to stay on the side lines. We know that if you have a good game you are God and if you misplace five passes in a row, they want to kick you out of Madrid. You have to find the middle ground”.

His progression
“I’ve improved. I’ve been at Madrid for five years and I’ve matured from a footballing point of view. I understand better how to read the game. Thanks to playing games you get better and learn more. That’s what the young players have to go through, move forward and improve”.

Best form
“I feel very comfortable, I feel good and when I go out to play I’m confident. I’m try everything and things are coming off for me. I don’t know if it’s the best form of my career, I hope even better moments are still to come”.

Pochettino: “Getting to compete against the best team in the world represents a great opportunity”
by Alberto Navarro | Photographer: Antonio Villalba

“Real Madrid have this tremendous ability to move up a gear whenever they need to and we need to be prepared to face them at their best”, noted the Tottenham boss.

Mauricio Pochettino and Hugo Lloris took to the media room at the Santiago Bernabéu with just over 24 hours to go until Tottenham face Real Madrid in the sides’ Champions League Matchday 3 fixture (Tuesday, 8:45pm CEST). The Spurs boss was first up to share his impressions: “Getting to compete against the best team in the world represents a great opportunity for us to assess our tactical and mental abilities. We’ve been working hard to ensure that coming to play here is a positive, and not a negative, experience. We were yet to have competed against the best team in the world and it’s a very difficult step to overcome”.

“Real Madrid have this tremendous ability to move up a gear whenever they need to and we need to be prepared to face them at their best, whilst being aware of their weaknesses and trying to hurt them. Facing Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu is special”.

The group phase
“Last year it seemed as if our group would have been easier to get out of and we ultimately ended up finishing third. What we’re trying to do now is perform, compete and enjoy ourselves as we play the type of football we want to. We’ve won our first two games, but we know when you’re up against sides of the standing of Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund that it’ll go right down to the last matchday”.

Isco
“Every coach wants to sign the best players. Isco has always been a player whose creative talents place him above the rest and he’s currently at the pinnacle of his development at this great club. He’s a player we’ll have to keep tabs on and his magic is plain for all to see”.

“It’s only by having players like this that you can win so many titles. Zidane is very natural and his management skills are excellent. There’s nobody better than him to understand these star players. He’s very assured and doesn’t need to prove anything to be the leader. That’s the most significant thing about him. There’s no way you can question his knowledge of the game”.

Lloris: “This stadium is a marvellous place in which to play football”
“We’ve gained in confidence with the results we’ve achieved, but there’s still a long way to go and we haven’t achieved anything yet. The important thing is that we’re ready to compete against what is currently the best team in the world. We’re going to try and enjoy ourselves and be aggressive. This stadium is a marvellous place in which to play football. Real Madrid have greater experience and can up their performance levels at any given time, but we’re all raring to go”.

Praise for Cristiano Ronaldo
“He’s a tremendous player and he has won everything going during his career, but Real Madrid are a top team and they can create chances at any time. It’ll be tough and we’ll be giving our all to beat them”.

Benzema
“He’s an extraordinary player and is one of the world’s best. He’s doing a great job and he’s one of their key players. It’s no mean feat to perform to the standard that he is producing at Real Madrid. You can only but have respect for him”.

Varane
“I’ve got great respect for him. He’s one of the best defenders in the world and he’s won a lot of silverware with Real Madrid. He’s been playing at the top of the game for a long time and it’ll be great to catch up with him”.
