The Week So Far…

26 Jul

I make a whole big statement about starting to post again and then promptly get felled by an epic bronchial infection that has had me flat on my ass all week. Typical.  Anyhow, I’m slowly starting to come out of it now so I’m going to try again! There’s the bulk of a week to catch up on so I’ll do a drive by.

Andriy Lunin Presentation

Our newest Blanco and first Ukrainian, 19 year old keeper Andriy met with the Real Madrid faithful on Monday.  As we’re getting pretty stacked up in the goalkeeper department (and the potential of Courtois possibly coming), the young’un will more than likely go out on loan. But if he stays and is chosen for the third keeper, it will be the first time in 26 years that the position isn’t filled by someone from the academy.

Lunin: “Real Madrid will make me stronger because I’m surrounded by the best in the world”

“I chose this club because I want to win and keep winning”, stated the young Ukrainian goalkeeper.

Soon after taking his first steps on the Santiago Bernabéu turf as a new Real Madrid player, Andriy Lunin faced the press in the stadium’s media room. The goalkeeper was welcomed by Álvaro Arbeloa, who said: “It’s a source of great joy for all of madridismo that a player like Lunin should choose Real Madrid. Forming part of this club and growing as a player will see you become a better goalkeeper, but also a better person. All of the employees, your teammates and the fans will ensure that you and your family feel at home”.

The young goalkeeper then had a few words to say following Arbeloa’s introduction: “I’m thrilled to be here. It’s the best club in the world and it’s a real honour to be part of Real Madrid. I’m very happy. I chose Real Madrid because winning is the most important element of sport and like any other sporting professional, I want to win and keep winning. Right now I’m training with the team and I’m very happy. I want to pick up more experience and grow stronger every day, because I’ll be surrounded by the best players in the world. Beyond this, we’ll discuss what is best for me with the club”.

His idols
“There are many good, strong goalkeepers in the world and I try to learn from every one of them to improve. Keylor Navas and Courtois are two top keepers. Keylor is in the team now and I’m thrilled to have the chance to train alongside him and learn all I can. Of the Real Madrid goalkeepers, Iker Casillas was one that I learned an awful lot from as a kid and I followed his matches and his development closely”.

“I’m very pleased to be training with this team. The level of the players here is different, it’s so high, and that will help me to get better. I’ve been quite struck by everything during my first week of training. The attitude, focus, the level of the players. It’s tough to pick out just one aspect. They’ve made me feel very welcome, we’re working hard, looking forwards. It’s a team with a lovely atmosphere and great friendship. Setting foot on the Bernabéu pitch is incredibly difficult to put into words”.

The language
“I’m studying Spanish every day but I still don’t speak too well”.

The first Ukrainian at Real Madrid
“To be the first Ukrainian to pull on this shirt is an honour and makes me very proud. I can only thank Shevchenko for believing in me and giving me the chance to make my debut with the national team. He helps me out a lot, he shares his experiences with me and he’s wished me all the best regarding the transfer”.

A Visit From An Old Friend

Madridista Placido Domingo came to visit the team yesterday as they prepare for their US tour. He seemed pleased with how the team is working together. Oddly though, he only posed for pictures with the coaching staff.

Training

The team had a double session today and were joined by Castilla central midfielder Jaume. (Video)

A Visit To The Real Madrid Foundation’s Campus Experience

The team and coaching staff visited with the children participating in the various camp and posed for pictures. What a great surprise for the kids!

Benzema: “I have to keep working hard to continue to etch my name into the club’s history books”

“We know that Lopetegui is a coach who likes his teams to have the ball and play a possession-based game”, he declared.

At the close of the 10th day of pre-season training, Karim Benzemasat down with Realmadrid.com and Realmadrid TV. The forward, who’s about to embark on his 10th season at Real Madrid, spoke about the exciting challenges that lie ahead: “We have to keep winning silverware because the target here is always to win things as a team. On a personal level, I’ll be looking to have a better season than I did last time round and continue to etch my name into the club’s history books”.

“So far this pre-season, we’ve been working really hard and putting in some good work. We know that it’s demanding, but it sets us in good stead for the rest of the season”.

Lopetegui
“We know that Lopetegui is a coach who likes his teams to have the ball and play a possession-based game. He also places great emphasis on working hard when we lose the ball and how we press after we’ve given possession away”.

Silverware
“I couldn’t have imagined achieving everything that I have, but I joined this club to win silverware, be a success and achieve a lot of things. I knew that I’d have some tough seasons, but it doesn’t matter because this is the best club in the world. I’m really happy”.

Pre-Season Tour

The team leaves in 3 days to participate in the International Champions Cup for the 6th time. The matches are as follows:

Manchester United – Real Madrid July 31 at 8:00pm local time at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Real Madrid – Juventus August 4th at 6:00pm local time at the FedEx Field in Landover, MD.

Real Madrid-Roma August 7th at 8:00pm local time at the MetLife in East Rutherford, NJ.

I’m having surgery on the morning of the 7th. I cannot believe that the date coincided with RM being in town, but it can’t be helped. I thought about trying to go anyhow but then I could feel Shigs’ side eye without even having to look in her direction. Theoretically, I guess I could…nah, I can feel the stink eye again. It’s going to be the first year since 2011 that I haven’t seen them when they have been even vaguely close by. I committed to something on the 4th or I would be joining mygypsyspirit in MD to see them. I’m really hoping that they have some sort of open practice session the night before the match. That would be awesome and something that I definitely could make. I’m going to keep my ears peeled. I’m going to miss these knuckleheads (and I say that most lovingly). You can get tickets and more info on all the matches/teams on via International Champions Cup.

Award Nominations

Congratulations to Zizou who has been nominated for the The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award. Cristiano, Lukita and The Baby have been nominated for The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award. Others shortlisted are: De Bruyne, Griezmann, Hazard, Kane, Mbappé, Messi and Salah

And did you see this little bit of transfer news? Antonio Adan signed to Atleti! He did quite well for himself during their ICC game vs. Arsenal as well. We all know how much the Madrid fans on both sides of the city love when a player goes between the teams. It’s like a line you don’t cross (although he left RM in 2013, he came up through La Fabrica). But you know what, Courtois used to play for Atleti, so goalkeeper for goalkeeper, we’ll each get one and no one can bitch, okay? 😉 But no matter what, I always wish one of our former players luck (unless they’re playing against us).
