U-20 Women’s World Cup 2018: Round 1 Recap

8 Aug

This is the entrance to the Stade de la Rabine in Vannes, France. Vannes is one of four host sites for the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and can we all just agree it has the best stadium entrance. My internal history geek is freaking out right now.

Entrance aside, the U-20 WWC kicked off on August 5 which means it is time for female football players to “Dare to Shine”. At least according FIFA branding for the tournament. Why do women’s tournaments keep getting saddled with these insipid and patronizing slogans? (Btw, this is next year’s WWC slogan too).

The men’s World Cup tagline was “where the stars align”. Why weren’t they dared to shine? This pseudo-inspirational garbage only serves to suggest that women aren’t confident, that female players aren’t confident and need to be told to be so.

They’re confident. We’re confident. BELIEVE ME, WE’RE CONFIDENT.

To reinforce the importance of women daring to shine FIFA wrangled a few male players in Russia to pose with said slogan as promotion for the WWC.

Raise your hand if you saw any of these photos. Raise your hand if seeing Toni holding this sign enticed you to tune in. Maybe if he or Harry Kane or any of the other male players involved tweeted their photo or really any acknowledgement or support for the U-20 WWC tournament then maybe this promotion would actually be a … promotion. Maybe they’re saving it all for next year. 🙄

Don’t worry though. Michael Essien is there repping the men and showing his support for the Black Princesses all over his social media.

FIFA want you to know that they are invested in women’s football and this tournament. As proof they brought the captains for each participating U-20 team to Russia for a two-day workshop.

This was a good move and hopefully they’ll continue doing it in the future but with both women and men.

As for news about the participating teams, New Zealand came all the way to France to clean up garbage.

Spain came to learn how to dance.

And Haiti, who are making their first appearance ever in the tournament, came to party with FIFA’s Secretary General.

Haiti wins this round of which country has the most game.
