U-20 Women’s World Cup 2018: Round 2 Recap

12 Aug

After the second round, Netherlands and Germany are the first two teams to qualify for the quarter-finals and Haiti and Ghana are the first two teams heading home. If you are looking to tune in this weekend, Group C will have some high drama with Spain, Japan, and the USA battling for the two top spots.

If you are unaware, Spain is on a bit of a hot streak with their women’s youth teams. Their U-19 team successfully defended their UEFA Championship title in July. Their U-17 team won their fourth UEFA Championship title in May and are heading to Uruguay this fall for the FIFA U-17 WWC (they finished fifth in 2016). The U-20 team finished fifth as well in 2016 and they are definitely playing to win here.

Statistically, a total of 46 goals have been scored. Six players have scored 3 goals each, with two of those having scored a hat trick. Every team has scored at least one goal thus far.

In terms of discipline, there have been zero red cards and 46 yellow cards. Germany, Netherlands, and Japan are the only teams to not yet be carded.
