Lopetegui: “We’re excited going in to the Champions League and are ambitious”
by Alberto Navarro

“The Roma squad is bigger and better than last season and they’re going to make things difficult for us”, added the Real Madrid coach.

Julen Lopetegui spoke in the press room at Real Madrid City the day before the game against Roma at the Santiago Bernabéu (Wednesday, 9pm CEST). The Whites’ coach assessed the opening game in the competition for the European champions: “We’re excited going in to the Champions League and are ambitious. It makes me feel proud, responsible and very excited about a competition which I don’t need to explain what it means to us and what Real Madrid means to the Champions League. We’ll come up against a very difficult opponent”.

“Last season Roma knocked Atlético out in the Group Stage, Barcelona in the quarter-finals and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. They’re a side that has improved and the squad is more complete and has more depth. They also have the same coach and continue to consolidate the way they play”.

Ambitious and aggressive opponents
“I expect a stronger opposition than last year and a tough game. They’ll make things difficult for us and force us to work hard to beat them. I expect an ambitious and aggressive team. They’re ready to play that way. They look after the ball well and are ambitious”.

Three consecutive Champions Leagues won
“You can only take your hat off to the players and their coach. Now I’m going in to each competition with desire, enthusiasm and confidence that we will win. It’s normal that there’s pressure at Real Madrid”.

The sporting development of Varane
“The players are having great experiences and winning a World Cup is extraordinary and definitive in the progression of the player. All this makes the player better and gives him more personality and confidence. We’re delighted with Varane, with Sergio, with Nacho, who has grown a lot, and with Vallejo, who is young but will definitely help us”.

“The decisions are made thinking about how we’ll approach each match and we have a lot of matches coming up so we’ll look for the best options for each match. We’ve got a lot of depth in the changing room and different options in each game”.

Playing style
“The fast pace in San Mamés was due to the opposition going about their game in a different way. When we feel that the best thing is to up the pace, we’ll do it and when we believe that it’s the ball that has to move fast, we’ll do that too. Everything depends on each game”.

The goalkeepers
“I’m not going to say anything about them. We’ve got great options in the goal and I’m sure that we’ll get the decisions right. We’ll see how things go bit by bit. I feel we’ve got great options in the goal and whoever plays, we’ll be well represented. Keylor is very good. Fighting and competing because he’s a competitor and is doing what we expected of him, like his teammates”.

Marcelo and Modric
“After the World Cup we’re getting them involved gradually, things will even out as time goes by. We’ll always look for the best options, but we have a lot of depth in the squad. Modric is fine, getting better and better. He is resting after his long summer through matches and training”.

The arrivals of Mariano and Vinicius
“Mariano can be part of the eleven at any time or come on from the bench. I’m sure he will help us a lot. Vinicius is very young and when we believe that he can help us, we’ll decide what we have to decide”.

Cristiano Ronaldo
“We only focus on our squad, which we’re very happy with and it’s ready to fight for every title. We’re convinced that we’re going to have a great journey in every competition”.

Ramos: “We always compete, convinced that we can win the Champions League”
by Alberto Navarro

“Remaining ambitious to win is what has made us the best club in the world” explained the Whites’ captain.

Sergio Ramos spoke ahead of Real Madrid’s opening match in the Champions League against Roma (9pm CEST): “Regardless of where the final of the Champions League is, Real Madrid are always obliged to be competitive. In this season’s Champions League we have to defend the title and it’s always a bit more motivation when final is in Madrid, the home of an opponent like Atlético. We always compete, convinced that we can win the Champions League”.

“The boss has said it well. It’s an honour and responsibility, which is what this team has shown. Three Champions League wins are not by chance. Remaining ambitious to win is also what has made us the best club in the world”.

Pressure
“We’ve got a long way to go until the final. There are some very strong opponents. Barcelona are a direct rival and are favourites. It’s normal that the great players who represent them make them the team that they are. It’s one of the most beautiful competitions”.

“I prefer a Champions League over the Copa del Rey. It’s true that all competitions are important, but some more so than others. It’s not easy to win the Champions Leagues and you have to respect that. It’s not normal to have won so many Champions Leagues in so few years. Any player in this squad would prefer a Champions League over three Copa del Reys”.

Advice for Vinicius
“He has some unique attributes, he’s a great player and has a promising future. Between Real Madrid and him, they must work out the best way forward and he still needs to continue developing. We don’t have to put pressure on him”.

Di Francesco: “Real Madrid have some great players and we’ll have to do better defensively”
by Javier Vazquez

“The Bernabéu is a marvellous setting and I’m excited to be back here”, declared De Rossi.

Roma coach, Eusebio di Francesco; and team captain, Daniele de Rossi, addressed the press gathered inside the media room at the Santiago Bernabéu, with the Italian tactician previewing his side’s opponents in their Champions League curtain-raiser in the following terms: “Real Madrid have got some great players. In my view, Sergio Ramos is a really, really good player. He’s able to operate in defence, in the middle third and I’d even say as a forward”.

“Tomorrow night’s match is a very important one and it’s the sort of game that everyone wants to be involved in. Madrid look to create spaces, they’re more lively and press more than we do and are able to easily switch from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 and that’s something they can still improve on. We’re two teams with contrasting styles and we’ll have to try and do better defensively”.

Asensio
“Asensio is a player that I really like because he represents the future of Real Madrid. His characteristics mean that he’s different to Cristiano Ronaldo, but he works for the team and displays real quality. Throughout the club’s history, Madrid have become famous for being Real Madrid, not for being Real Ronaldo and I’m convinced that they’ll continue to win just as much as they have up until now”.

De Rossi: “It’s an honour to play at the Bernabéu”
“I’m really excited at the prospect of playing at this stadium. The Santiago Bernabéu is an arena where unique emotions are generated. This could be my last Champions League campaign and my final game here. It’s a key match and it’ll be tough, but you’ve got to use the emotion of the game in your favour. It’s always special and an honour to play at the Bernabéu. It’s a marvellous setting. The Real Madrid squad is full of brilliant players, they’ve got an incredible team and I’ve got great respect and admiration for Real Madrid”.

I’m having surgery in the morning tomorrow but I’m hoping to be home and up for watching the match tomorrow. I think it will be a good one.

Hala Madrid!
