Ready For Roma Again

26 Nov

Lord, I take some time off to concentrate on my personal life and all hell breaks loose. Oh Real Madrid. I can’t turn my back on you for two minutes, can I?

The match vs. Eibar was a clusterfuck and the less said about it, the best. Let’s just move on and do better.

The team made the short flight to Rome today. The U19 team joined them as they will be competing in the UEFA Youth League. The team is headquartered at the Waldorf Astoria Cavalieri. (Video)

“Every game and training session at this club are acid tests”, commented Solari.

Santiago Solari took to the Stadio Olimpico media room prior to his side’s final training session ahead of their Champions League Matchday 5 meeting with Roma. The Real Madrid boss previewed the game in the following terms: “At this club, every match and training session represents an acid test. Throughout the club’s history, Real Madrid have had to overcome many tests and when they fall, they always recover, that’s why this is the most decorated club in the history of the game. That has to be our mentality”.

“We’ll have to perform as we always do in the Champions League and produce a display that matches our heritage in this competition. The Éibar result was a real setback, but that’s in the past now. We’ve analysed the performance and will be trying to improve on it. Things move on very quickly and we’ve got another game tomorrow, in another competition, and that’s where our focus and energy has to be”.

Sergio Ramos
“He’s an icon at Real Madrid and within Spanish sport. It’s everyone’s duty to protect him. The whole point of journalism is to discover the truth, which is something that isn’t open to opinion. If false information is reported, the whole meaning of journalism is lost “.

“It was a real setback, but it’s now in the past. We’ve analysed it and will try to improve in the areas where we need to. Just as we did following our four straight wins, as soon as one game is over, you’ve got to focus on the next one. We’re here at the Olimpico, in another competition, and all of our energy has to be on the Roma game”.

“There are a lot of factors in football and not all of them are related to your attitude. Responsibility is always an individual matter and the group effort depends on the sum of all parts. There’s no point in watering down the issue of responsibility and making it part of the collective. If one player doesn’t defend, it makes things difficult, if two don’t defend, it makes us weaker and if three don’t defend, we won’t be capable of beating anyone”.

Casemiro’s absence
“We’ve got several players who are capable of playing in that role, and even some of the centre-backs can play there. We’ve got Ceballos, who has done a good job in there. Each game is different. The players we could play in there are Valverde, Kroos, Llorente… Just like the rest of the injured players, we want to welcome Casemiro back as soon as possible.”

“He’s training well and he’s a really important player for us. I’m counting on him just as much as I am every other member of the squad”.

Memories of the Stadio Olimpico
“I spent three marvellous years at Inter and have some amazing memories. I won three league titles in a row. I remember scoring a goal here against Lazio, although I can’t remember which end it was in. I’ve also played here against Roma and there’s a fantastic atmosphere here. I recall the fans here supporting their team right throughout the game”.

Carvajal: “We want to finish top of the group and it’s time to prove it tomorrow night”

“We’ve got a tough match ahead of us and now is the perfect time to produce a reaction and fight on all fronts”, stated the wing-back.

Dani Carvajal addressed the media gathered inside the Stadio Olimpico press room to preview Tuesday night’s clash against Roma (9pm CET kick-off), in which Real Madrid will be looking to secure a spot in the Champions League round of 16: “We’ve got a tough match ahead of us, it’ll be another battle. We want to finish top of the group and it’s time to prove it tomorrow night. As the gaffer would say, we’ll have to show some guts. We’ll must also keep a cool head and show that we know how to manage the games because those are all factors that come together to bring you success”.

“Football matches are always hard fought and if you don’t give your all, anybody can beat you. We all know that we’re not getting the best of results, but now is not the time for words, it’s time to act. It’s time to get out there, we’re in November and it’s the perfect time to react and fight for everything and that starts tomorrow against tough opponents. We’ve got to win here and try to start getting some good results.”

His fitness
“Unfortunately, I had to come on the other day after a teammate got injured. Given that I came on without having warmed up, I felt pretty good out there. We didn’t give the best account of ourselves, but on a personal level, I was pleased to be back out on the pitch, which is where I’m at my happiest”.

“It’ll be a very tough game. We saw how well Roma fared in this competition last year in reaching the semi-finals. It’ll be a really tough game against a side that play good football and put a lot of crosses into your box, but we mustn’t show any fear. We need to come here and win”.

“I imagine that with them being at home and in front of their fans, they’ll come out and look to press high up. They’ll be keen to prevent us from playing out from the back. I’m not sure what the keys to the game will be, we’ve got a clear idea of what our weapons are because we’ve been working on them since Solari came in a few weeks ago and we hope that they prove effective”.

“I haven’t seen what state the pitch is in, we’ve got training now and we’ll see what it’s like. If the playing surface isn’t in good condition it could lead to injuries to players from both team and I hope that it’ll be in perfect shape by tomorrow night”.

Season so far
“We go out to win every game, but sometimes things don’t go as you want them to. It’s not easy to play for this club, with the level of demands we’re under, because every team highlights the game against Madrid on their fixture list. We’re only a few points off top spot in LaLiga and I think that we’ll still have a big say in things”.

“Those comments are a personal opinion and we’re all entitled to our opinions. Success often isn’t about being the best or the worse. Julen [Lopetegui] isn’t here because the results didn’t go his way. Solari is now in charge and he’s not been here long, but I think that we’re going to achieve some big things with him in charge”.

Much has already been said in the media about the alleged anti-doping breach. RM released a statement about the situation. Sergio has also denounced the claims. BBC Sport went into more details. UEFA has closed the case now. Sergio has threatened legal action against anyone who continues to accuse him.

What a balagan!

Let’s hope that the match tomorrow goes off without a hitch and we play with heart and fervor.
