Watishing Into 2019

31 Dec

I honestly thought nothing could top 2017 for sheer fuckery. To that, 2018 said “Hold my beer.” Real Madrid-wise, there were highs (Decimotercera for one thing) and lows (the departures of Zizou and Cristiano, our current confusing form, etc.) but through all of it, we persevere.

This year has been another tough one for the team and for me, personally. So much of my focus has shifted to the current political situation here in the US. It has been depressing and infuriating and football hasn’t always given me the happy respite that it has in the past. I’m trying, people, lord knows. I know that I’m not the only person feeling this way. I’ve talked to several Watishistas about it and right now, it is so damn hard to focus on anything else. We’re in a fight for our rights, our lives and the very soul of this country. Everything else pales in comparison. Everything.

The other day, I was watching video that mygypsyspirit and I shot in the Bernabeu when we went to El Clasico in 2014. Life seemed so much simpler back then. I sang along with Plácido Domingo’s Himno Real Madrid Centenario on the video and had a bit of cry (that song always gets me right in the feels). We were so happy then. I pray we can return to that lightness soon. I want to find joy in football and the simple everyday pleasures without a cloud hanging over our collective heads. Sigh.

But enough seriousness. In short, 2018, don’t let the door hit you in the arse on your way out. AND SPEAKING OF ARSE…

As always, we end our year with Nando’s (which is one of the eternal happy things) Here are the previous years: (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 2016, 2017) which means that HB & HB is about to turn 8 years old!!!! Wow. Where has the time gone?!

Nando is now at Sagan Tosu in Japan. I miss him. I miss so many of these guys.

Someone is living the dream right there. Who among us wouldn’t feel compelled to grab a bit o’ Nando’s badonk?

At least he sometimes gets to hang with Andres Iniesta who is now playing for Vissel Kobe.

Much like Nando & Andres, I hope that you are able to connect with friends, old and new in the coming year and that your 2019 is happy, healthy prosperous and beautiful. That you find small pockets of grace and kindness as you go through your days and that our world moves closer to peace and sanity.

And as always, Hala Madrid y nada mas!

Love,

Lozil
