Cristiane’s Hat Trick Carries Brazil to the Top of Group B

11 Jun

Brazil and Jamaica met on Sunday to open Group B. These two teams have similar stories about lack of federation support. While the story about Bob Marley’s daughter Cedella’s work to fundraise to save the Jamaican’s women’s team seems like a feel good story, there’s nothing good about how many women’s teams suffer due to issues with their federations – funding, support, etc. Brazil too has had consistent struggles with its federation so it’s a wonder to see how well these women perform in spite of the lack of support. Some of the commentary about Cristiane mentioned her time away from the game but may not have mentioned that it was due to her concerns regarding the treatment of the women’s team.

Marta was missing from the game with a thigh injury but Cristiane was more than capable about putting this game to bed. She opened the scoring in the 15th minute after heading a pass from Andressa into the net.

Khadija “Bunny” Shaw showed her strength and speed, forcing Barbara to make a big save in the 29th minute and again in the 34th minute but for most of the first half, Jamaica seemed unable to get her the ball.

Just before the half ended, a harsh penalty was given after Swaby was smacked by the ball which hit her elbow. Andressa stood to take the penalty but 19 year old Schneider saved the penalty.

Sydney Schneider had an amazing game despite the weak defensive team in front of her. The New Jersey native plays her college ball at UNC- Wilmington. Unfortunately for Jamaica, she couldn’t clear Cristiane’s second goal after a poor clearance from the Jamaican defense.

And she scored her hattrick a few minutes later after being fouled and scored a free kick which bounced over the line after hitting the crossbar.

Jamaica have great speed and athleticism, especially in Swaby and Shaw but they will have to tighten up the back line if they are to do better in the next two matches. However, they should be very grateful for Schneider who really kept them in the match. Jamaica will meet Italy on Friday and Brazil will face Australia on Thursday.
