Italy Win Group C even with a Loss to Brazil; Marta Breaks a Record

19 Jun

Regardless of how you feel about Marta, she is a force to be reckoned with and now she has a record to prove it.

Marta’s penalty in the 62nd minute of yesterday’s match moved her past Miroslav Klose’s record for the most World Cup goals. She was clearly overjoyed and it was wonderful to watch her teammates celebrate her achievement. Well done, Marta.

However, Brazil also faced the news that Andressa would be out for the rest of the tournament due to a thigh injury. Her distress was evident in the warm ups and Brazil continues to face a string of injuries.

The match itself was a tight match with nearly equal possession and goal opportunities for both sides. Both Ludmila and Bonansea had good runs in the early minutes of the match. Ludmila was stopped by a perfectly timed tackle by Guagni and Bonansea’s shot was cleared at the near post by Barbara.

There was a period where it seemed like the corners would go on forever. The local commentator confirmed that there were 8 corners within the first 20 minutes and 6 of them were Brazil’s. Giuliani was solid in her defense as Cristiane had more than a few chances that could have easily been in the net were it not for Giuliani’s wide reach. Debinha also had her chances robbed by Giuliani’s keeping skills.

Girelli tried to add to her tally of goals but she was offsides.

Things continued on an even pace between the teams until Debinha and Linari made contact (it was too light and even to be called a collision) and Debinha went down and drew the penalty. No VAR review which was a little surprising after the way this tournament has gone so far but regardless, Marta stepped up and took the penalty and scored in the 74th minute. And as I mentioned earlier, this goal gives her the distinction of being the player with the most World Cup goals, man or woman.

In the end, it is as expected. Italy win the group and Brazil are through, though as third place due to the goal machine that is Sam Kerr. But on we go! What an exciting group this one turned out to be!
