China and Spain draw level to close out Group B; Both Progress to the Round of 16

22 Jun

China and Spain finish group play in a scoreless draw. China will go through as one of the best Third Place teams and Spain are runners up for Group B.

Spain came out of the gates ready to go. Lucia Garcia tried to copy her goal against South Africa by maneuvering around the keeper who ran quickly off her line but she was not quick enough to get the shot off before a defender got back to clear it. A few minutes later Hermoso found her again and yet again, she beat Peng but her shot went wide.

This felt a bit similar to their first match because Spain had the majority of the possession and were clearly frustrated but they were not careful enough with their passing and finishing their chances. However, the big difference was that China’s defense stood tight to the end. No penalties were waiting for Spain to break the deadlock.

Torrecilla and Hermoso continued to create chances but again, they could not control the ball and chances melted as soon as they are created. China meanwhile seemed content with the tie.

On either side of the half, Spain did give the Chines keeper Peng some business to worry about. Hermoso had a good shot before and soon after the second half start Guijarro nearly got the header before Peng collected it just under the crossbar.

Commentators mentioned at the hour mark that Spain were outshooting China 14 to 1. But the scoreline showed no evidence of this. However, Peng had been solid for China and kept the clean sheet so it would be hard to only comment about Spain’s inability to score. They had a fierce opponent in Peng.

For Spain, in the second half alone, eight different people had attempts on goal. Guijarro alone had five of them and Hermoso had three. But there were just no cracks in the Chinese defense.

China has a bit of a scare in the closing minutes when Peng collided with the post and was injured but she was able to continue. She had singlehandedly held China up in this match. She will most certainly be needed in the next round.

While this was a rather frustrating match to watch, this result will not hurt either team. Its on to the next round for both of them.
