Real Madrid FINALLY announce a women’s team!

27 Jun

I have been waiting for this for what seems like my entire life. I’m quite sure Lozil, hopechaser and ForzaSusan have felt similarly. I think I sense a trip to Madrid for a match!

After a few days of reports, the club made the official announcement on Tuesday. And it’s about damn time.

Let me

We remained the only top tier club in Spain without a women’s team. And, quite frankly, I have always found it unacceptable. This team, with its enormous bank of resources, should have led the charge in women’s teams. There have been girls in the youth system for years, but what happens when they are ready to be pro? They’ve had to leave the club they grew up without even a chance of playing for Los Blancos (er… Las Blancas).

Yeah, that has changed now. But it should have changed years ago.

Los Blancos have absorbed an existing team, C. D. Tacón, who will train and play their matches at Real Madrid City aka Valdebebas for the 2019/2020 season. Then in the 2020/2021 season, they will become Las Blancas.

What I fear is that, in the years it takes for Las Blancas to build a successful squad, the board will decide that the women’s team is not financially worth having and they will ditch it. At which point, I think I will have lost all of my faith in the club I love.

Now… With that out of the way. I’M SO EXCITED!

Who will we sign?! Which World Cup stars will become Las Galacticas? Could we see, as Jess Houwen of Managing Madrid suggests, Crystal Dunn? Or Lindsey Horan? What about Rose Lavelle?

How many of us will be purchasing kits?! *raises hand*

Oh, and where’s my phone call with an offer of head coach?
