I’m late bringing you this as I was waiting for a Women’s World Cup all-star team to be announced first. One hasn’t been and likely won’t be. I guess FIFA just wasn’t interested in doing this anymore. Oh well. At least we still have the individual awards to celebrate and debate. Continue reading
Balls and Boots and Bangers and … Golden Tweets?

England’s tactical errors gift the USA the chance for a fourth title
6 JulHow do I open for this match? Hmmm. How do I open? *drums fingernails on chin* Hmmm. Do I start with England’s colossal tactical failures? Hmmm. Do I start with the USA not just parking the bus but buying and decorating it as well? Hmmm. Maybe I should go with the poor sportsmanship displayed by players on both teams? Or maybe, how about … Continue reading

Average US hold off the French press and head into the semi-finals
1 JulFor a final match, this was a worthy quarter-final. Does that make sense? France v USA was first hyped as THE match of the tournament after the tournament draw concluded back on December 8. France, the host country v the USA, the reigning world champions. A dynamite, sure-fire sell for FIFA, the tournament organizers, and football fans the world over. Better than any possible final match-up. But when the final whistle blew last Friday, was it really THE match of the tournament? Did the execution match or exceed the hype? Hmmm, I don’t think so. USA need penalties to edge past a brazen Spain
27 JunI had not been able to watch a full Spain match in real time until this one and wow. Worth. The. Wait. Watching Spain move in blocks around the field to stifle the US attack was grin-inducing. They showed so brilliantly a concerning issue with the US team: if they can’t stay in their predetermined lane they waffle and scramble and neutralize themselves into partial paralysis. Continue reading

US retain top spot in Group F with Sweden the runner-up
21 JunPerhaps impressed by all the rotation chatter from their last match, the US went and rotated again fielding almost the same team from their first match v Thailand but with significantly less excitement. Sweden rotated a bunch of players too. In fact, you could say the US brought out their A-team while Sweden fielded their B+ team. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, yes I went there. Continue reading
Chile and Endler bring the spice if not the goals v the US
19 JunThis is where I tell you the US did the most amazing thing during their matchup with Chile. OMG, they rotated their squad. Whaaa?!?!?!?!?! I know! WHO DOES THIS?! Just about every top tier team in every top tier league in the world whenever they want. Ahem. Continue reading
Thailand win attention if not the match v the United States
15 JunIt was a magical day back in 2015 when Thailand, on their Women’s World Cup debut, pulled off a 3-2 win over fellow debutants Ivory Coast. Their celebration was rapturous. The fan celebration was immense. It was a great day, a monumental day. But that was four years ago; why am I talking about it now? Continue reading
