World Cup 2014 – Group D: Uruguay vs Costa Rica Preview

14 Jun

When: June 14, 16:00 UTC-3
Where: Fortaleza, the state capital of Ceará located in northeastern Brazil
Stadium: Estádio Plácido Aderaldo Castelo

Stadium Capacity 64,846
Pitch Status: Good
Referee: Felix Brych (Germany)

Previous Meetings: The teams have meet before a total of 8 times, most recently in 2009 in the CONCACAF – CONMEBOL play-off. Incidentally, that win qualified Uruguay for the 2010 World Cup. Uruguay is undefeated in the last four meetings, winning two and drawing two.

Team News: Luis Suarez will not be starting the match. Costa Rica is without their top scorer Álvaro Saborío and defender Heiner Mora.

Team Weaknesses: Uruguay has an older and weaker defense, and Godin may not be enough to withstand sustained attacks. Costa Rica have only won 1 of their 5 games in 2014.

Team Strengths: Uruguay is all about the attack and rightfully so. Even with Suarez out, Cavani is a menace and will be itching to start the goals flowing. Costa Rica did win their last game, which will have boosted their confidence and make them relish their underdog status even more. They also have a hungry young attacker in Joel Campbell who could cause all sorts of problems to Uruguay’s high defense line.

Who Scored Prediction: Uruguay 1 – Costa Rica – 0
My Prediction: Uruguay 3 – Costa Rica 1
World Economic Forum (WEF) Competitiveness Prediction:

Chance of a Zlatan sighting: Nil

I’ve been getting the giggles over your subheads – sex policy, chance of a zlatan sighting, etc.
