Keylor Navas: “We want to win the Champions League, but we have to take it step by step”
“The team are doing a great job and we know that if we all defend together it makes it very difficult for our opponents to create danger”.
In an interview for UEFA, Keylor Navas discussed the latest at Real Madrid. The Whites goalkeeper analysed the team’s superb defensive efforts and looked ahead to Tuesday’s match against PSG: “They have top-quality players who can make life difficult for you at any moment. We all want to win the Champions League. We’re trying to prepare as well as possible for every game so as to get to the final and win it, but we have to take it step by step”.
You’ve enjoyed a great start to the season, keeping clean sheets in your first three Champions League games. Are you happy with the way things are going, both collectively and on a personal level?
Fortunately I’m getting the chance to play and I’m very happy about that. I hope that we can continue this good run. We’re doing a great job, but there’s a long way to go and many games still to play. We know that we’re a team that are expected to win trophies, and to do that we have to keep this up.
Could you describe the emotions you feel when you play in the Champions League? Do you feel more pressure in the competition?
They’re really special nights. The world’s top clubs are involved, and hearing the tournament anthem really motivates you. But out on the pitch it’s eleven versus eleven, and you have to get things right and not lose focus for even a second.
On Tuesday, you come up against PSG again. You’ll be facing one of the best attacks in Europe. Do you prepare in any particular manner for these types of games?
I always try to prepare as well as possible for matches. They have top-quality players who can make life difficult for you at any moment, but I try to prepare for every game in the same way: with training and mental preparation. I want to perform well, so I have to be focused and in the best shape possible.
Real Madrid won the Champions League two seasons ago. Are they ready to do it again?
Winning the trophy was massive for this club. We all want to win the Champions League, it’s one of our goals. We’re trying to prepare as well as possible for every game so as to get to the final and win it, but we have to take it step by step, because we still have to get through important games in the group stage and in the knockout stages. We’re putting our heart and soul into reaching the final and winning it.
Talk to us about the Real Madrid defence. How does the backline look to you?
The team are doing a great job. We’re all doing our bit in terms of defensive work. We know that if we all defend together, starting with the attackers, it makes it very difficult for our opponents to create danger. So we’re following the instructions of the coaching staff and trying to improve in every game.
What does it mean to play in goal at a club like Real Madrid?
I try to work hard and show the same level of enthusiasm every day to win my place in the team, and doing that at a club like this is a privilege. I’m very grateful to everyone. The fans really get behind us. That’s something that motivates you and makes you work all the harder to make the people who come to the stadium happy.
