World Cup 2018: Quarter-finals Recap

9 Jul

We’ve hit the quarter-finals in the World Cup and while there are plenty of candidates for which country has the best fans, I’d say there’s only one for the most obnoxious and eye-rolling inducing. It’s England. Of course it is. Try to tell me I’m wrong.

This tweet pretty much sums up my thoughts on what occurred after England’s win over Sweden –

On the flip side, do you remember Clovis Fernandes? I sure do and was sorry to hear of his passing a couple years ago. His sons are in Russia carrying on his legacy, his rockin’ ‘stache, and his hat.

Colombia received a warm welcome upon arrival back home. You can never say South Americans don’t purely love football no matter the outcome.

For the opposite of love, Brazil’s Fernandinho and his family received racial abuse and death threats after his unfortunate own goal vs Belgium. Completely unsurprising.

Croatia are down an assistant coach heading into the semi-final, with Ognjen Vukojevic sacked for posting an ill-advised video dedicating Croatia’s win to the Ukraine. They’re lucky to not be down a defender as well; Domagoj Vida (he of the pony-tailed head) took part in the video too. He received only a formal warning from FIFA.

In better news, Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic picked up the tab for fans watching the quarter-final at his hometown bar. Cheers!

In suspicious news, a Russian team doctor has admitted a player sniffed ammonia prior to being substituted on during their game vs Croatia. Ammonia is not a banned substance but it apparently is known to “improve the flow of oxygen in the blood and stimulate breathing” which makes its use something akin to pseudo-doping.
