Yossi Benayoun Subjected To Anti-Semitic Abuse In Malaysia

29 Jul

This whole sad, sorry incident took place during Chelsea’s pre-season tour.  Malaysia does not recognize the state of Israel and Yossi is apparently the first Israeli national to have played there. Not the warmest of receptions, to say the least. Complaints were filed, half assed apologies were made. Read on…

Chelsea have lodged an official protest against the Malaysian Football Association over what they claim was racist abuse suffered by their Israeli player Yossi Benayoun in Kuala Lumpur last week. The midfielder was booed and jeered whenever on the ball in the 1-0 win against Malaysia last Friday.

Benayoun was the first Israeli to play in Malaysia, which is pro Palestine. Initially thought to be a consequence of a bad tackle but after reviewing the match the club announced they had decided to make a formal complaint. A statement on the club’s website read: “Notwithstanding most fans behaving appropriately on the night, we believe Yossi was subjected to anti-semitic abuse by a number of supporters at the game.

English soccer team Chelsea has submitted an official complaint to the Malaysian Football Association for anti-Semitic abuse directed towards one of its players, Israeli Yossi Benayoun, during a friendly match in Kuala Lumpur last week.

In a statement made on Wednesday on the Chelsea FC website, the club stated “We believe Yossi was subjected to anti-Semitic abuse by a number of supporters at the game. Such behavior is offensive, totally unacceptable and has no place in football.”

Malaysia’s population has no diplomatic ties with Israel. Earlier this month, the government-backed Utusan Malaysian newspaper ran an editorial saying that an anti-government protest could allow “foreign Jews” to interfere in government affairs.

Chelsea posted the following statements on their website today.

Chelsea Football Club has received the below statement from the Malaysian FA following our representations to them regarding the abuse Yossi Benayoun received in last Thursday’s game against the Malaysian XI.

Chelsea FC statement:

‘We appreciate the prompt attention the Malaysian FA (MFA) has given our complaint.

Chelsea Football Club is committed to eradicating all discriminatory behaviour from the game and urges the MFA to take appropriate steps to stamp out this type of behaviour in future.

The club and Yossi accept the apology, and the matter is now closed.’

With regards to the above matter, the Football Association of Malaysia wishes to issue the following statement:

The FA of Malaysia have received a complaint from English Premier League side Chelsea FC over alleged racist abuse targeted at Israeli midfielder, Yossi Benayoun, during a friendly match with the Malaysian XI in Kuala Lumpur on 21st July 2011.

From our initial observations, if such an incident took place, it would have involved a small section of spectators at the match and this surely does not reflect the feelings of the majority of fans in this football loving country.

The FA of Malaysia would like to strongly register that we do not condone any form of racism in football. If such an incident did happen, we would like to apologize to the player concern, and also to Chelsea FC.

Thank you.

I love how the Malaysian FA doesn’t admit the abuse occured. They’re all like “Well, if it happened, we’re totes sorry.” Um, yeah. Not enough in my humble opinion.  There’s always a bunch of douchebags in every crowd who ruin everything for the decent people , but really, there’s got to be some sort of a crackdown across the board.   This sort of shit is not acceptable. FIFA, your move.  If one good thing came out of this, it’s the fact the Chelsea stepped up swiftly and backed their player.  I wish more clubs would do that (including our own – it took forever for the charges to be made for Marcelo and none were made for Manu). I appreciate that they filed the complaint and gave the issue some attention. I’m just sorry that Yossi had to go through that and that the Malaysian fans who aren’t total jerks are now going to be tarred with the same brush as the anti-Semitic arseholes who were jeering him.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting! It’s so sad that politics influences what happens during 90 minutes on a field. Ridiculous.
