When Frankenshirt Met Frankendress & Other Tales from London

24 Sep

One of the fun things to do every year is see what outrageous fashion appears at The Best awards. I mean, Dani Alves is always worth a look – remember when he went apeshit with a bedazzler? And Messi never disappoints in his sartorial faux pas. Ah, but our Sese in a class by himself as is his missus. The happy couple hit the plane attired in their signature idiosyncractic style. Special shoutout to Pilar’s tangerine studded leather jacket because that is truly something and Sergio is just bein’ Sergio. Note the Frankenshirt. I swear to fuck, this man cannot purchase something that hasn’t been pieced together from seven different other garments. I bet his fave Dolly Parton song is “Coat of Many Colors” Anyhow, at first glance, it’s Frankenlicious, but tame for Sergio. But you really need to see the full thing…

Now do you see what I mean? Take a moment and bask in the glory of that majestic jungle cat, would you? Is that a cheetah or  leopard? Since Sergio likes to patchwork the shit out of everything, it’s probably a cheepard or leotah.

And Pilar decided to get into the action is well. Don’t tell me, is that…YES IT IS! A FRANKENDRESS!

I could not be happier with this hybrid horror of a dress – it’s almost as if they put their heads together and said “What can we wear that will cheer Lozil up as she recovers from surgery?” And then they came up with this. Ugh, their minds! They say that couples that have been together awhile start to resemble each other. I just love that Sergio and Pilar do it with their “fashion”. (mygypsyspirit messaged me to ask “Why does this look like a James Bond photo?” Why indeed? Could it because hopefully future James Bond and all around dreamboat Idris Elba was the main presenter? Yum. Make sure you watch the videos to see all the famous folks in the crowd and lovely Idris.)

Sergio decided to go with a white tux jacket, which for him, isn’t too wild. It’s his ninth time in the FIFPro World 11. Mazel tov.

Real Madrid cleaned up with 4 players in the FIFPro World 11: Sergio, Marcelo, Lukita, and The Baby. They were joined by David De Gea, Dani Alves, N’Golo Kanté, Eden Hazard, Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The latter two did not attend the ceremony which made for some raised eyebrows. Interestingly, Messi voted for Cris for the first time (granted, in third place, but still).

Thibaut Courtois won The Best Goalkeeper and gave a very brief speech. Other nominees were Hugo Lloris and Kasper Schmeichel.

And our beloved Lukita once again beat out CR7 and Mo Salah for The Best Player award. The last person to win it besides Cristiano or Lionel was Kaka back in 2007.  (Video)  And his whole family came for the event. Ivano and Ema are getting so big! Vanja looked terrific. (BTW, Clarice was also there with Marcelo and looked amazing).

Marta won a record sixth Best Women’s Player award over Ada Hegerberg and Dszenifer Maroszan. Didier Deschamps won Best Men’s Coach beating out Zizou and Zlatko Dalic. Best Women’s Coach went to Reynald Pedros. The other nominees were Asako Takakura and Sarina Wiegman.

Mo Salah won the Puskas Award, beating out Cris & G-Money.  Not a bad consolation prize. (I’m really surprised that he wasn’t in the FIFPro World 11).

Lennart Thy won the Fair Play Award after missing a game to donate stem cells and blood to a patient with a rare form of leukemia when he discovered he was a match. His selfless act inspired thousands of new donors in the Netherlands where he plays for VVV-Venlo.

Peruvian supporters won the Fan Award which is the icing on the cake in a year which saw them make their first appearance in a World Cup in nearly 40 years. Japan and Senegal’s great fans were also nominated.

Do you think the choices were correct? How do you feel about Cris and Leo skipping the ceremony? How do you think proud Gooner Idris felt giving the award to a former Spurs player? We all know how much he loves them! (At this point, Lukita has been with us longer so hopefully it didn’t make Idris tetchy).

Looks like they had a great time! Back to work tomorrow

HALA MADRID!
